Talk by Jonathan Baird of Drones Etc. (Video)

In September 2014, DronesEtc.com founder Jonathan Baird spoke at the Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at BYU about his business. It’s a long talk, but we’ve excerpted a chunk of the intro where he discusses his company and why he is so excited about this venture and about drones in general.

By the way, you can find out more about the Rollins Center here.

As usual, the transcript for the talk is posted below the video so you can browse it quickly or if you’re hearing impaired.

The reason I’m here is one specific company we started called Drones Etc. Who here has seen the kind of explosion of drones in the news? I’m sure you guys have started to see them, maybe some of you actually have them. They’re becoming every day and very common place. The biggest thing I can compare it to is the GoPro. Back when the GoPro started people were like, oh cool, athletes use them, but now I bet the majority of you here have them. And it’s going to be the same with aerial drones. You’re going to transport medicine to you parents down the road. You’re going to be delivering groceries, you’re going to have groceries delivered to you. Every house might have a little balcony at the top of the house where a drone will come and that balcony is specifically for drone drop off. And you’re seeing this with Amazon. Google’s starting to test it out in Australia and other countries that allow it. The Us doesn’t allow it but they will. It’s gotten way ahead of anyone trying to stop it or over-regulate it, so I’m excited to see the future. I’ll show you really quick before I get into what I’m going to discuss. This is our site right here, DronesEtc.com. And you can see the different types of drones. I just want to play this for you. Pretty sweet. I brought one here but I’m not going to fly it around. But they are so easy to fly. Since I left being a TA, I started business after business, and some work and some are still working but the one’s that excited me most is this one. And if there’s anything I can leave here with you guys, you’re pretty lucky if you get to do a business that you’re super stoked about. When I was looking for the next business to start, this was 11 months ago, I was flying like the first prototype of this and I was like, Ok, I’m done, I’m selling this.

Drones Etc: DJI Phantom 2 Review

Drones Etc has all your drone needs covered. Whether you’re experienced or a novice, you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Check out the Drones Etc website. It’s got everything from drones to accessories and even complete packages for all levels of interest and expertise.

Today we’ve got a transcribed review of the DJI Phantom 2 drone. YouTuber bradscottphotography takes it for a spin, demonstrating how simple it is to use. Have a look.

All right, so we’re here at this beautiful river. We’re going to check out the DJI Phantom 2. It’s got the gimble on there so its all stabilized and ready to go. It’s got the GoPro Hero3 Plus. I just tried flying this thing yesterday for like five minutes, so this is my second time flying it. I just want to show you how easy these things are to fly and get some awesome aerial shots. So to start off, you just hold the triggers down and into the middle to get it going, and then this left one is your throttle, and this is your tilt. And the left is going to rotate around with the drone. So to start off you just want to give it full thrust.

So the thing I really like about the DJI Phantom 2 is that it’s basically locked in with GPS, so you can let it kind of drift in and it’s going to hover on the same spot. So you don’t have to keep your finger on the throttle the same time. You kind of get it to the elevation you like and just leave it there. You can rotate it nice and smooth. The stabilization works really good as you can see here. And like I said, this is only my second time testing it out, I definitely recommend it for beginners.

Nice! Second time flying it!

Looks like fun! Now’s a good time to get on board and join in the fun.
