Hey! Today we’re going to take a look at the SJ4000 Wifi from SJCAM. We’ve got a couple reviews for you, as usual, with the video review transcribed out for easy perusal. Up first is a comparison review, with the SJ4000 ranked side by side with the GOPRO Hero3. Then, scroll down to find some other comparisons and evaluations.
SJ4 goes for about $117 on Ebay and the GOPRO here is about $399. They both come in a waterproof case. The SJ4000 is 12 megpixels and so is the GOPRO Hero3. It’s 12 megapixels also. But for me, I just needed something to record video that has a decent quality. I’m not making movies with this thing. So as long as it’s decent quality I’m satisfied. The SJ is a little thicker on the side profile. I like the fact that it has an external screen. It comes in handy. On the other hand you can buy an external screen for the GOPRO Hero3 for an extra $100 added to the $399 price tag. It’s going to bring you to over $500 for the set up, which is a plus for the SJ. Side profile is just a bit little thicker. I like it. Looks nice. Let’s see how it compares. I got the GOPRO on top and the SJ on the bottom. A couple buddies of mine playing ping pong. To me, I gotta be honest, there is a slight advantage with the GOPRO. The image quality is maybe 20% sharper and clearer, but 20% is that really worth 300 extra dollars? I don’t think so. Not if you’re just using it as a second camera or getting underwater video, or mounting it to your car or what not. The image quality is comparable. With the naked eye you can barely see it. But if you look closely you can see that the GOPRO has a slight advantage. But I think for the price the SJCAM is definitely worth it. The SJCAM has wi-fi. Also there is an app for it. SJCAM app, HD app. You can change all the settings in the camera just like the GOPRO app. At the price point of $117 on Amazon, you can’t beat it. It’s defintely worth it. A quarter of the price and I’d say 90% of the quality of the GOPRO. You can’t beat that price at all. I’d go with the SJ. SJ all day. Here’s a video of a duck I shot outside my house with no color correction. I had the dynamic range on inside the camera internal. Wide dynamic range they call it. As you can see, shot in bright daylight. Quality’s really good. I’m really happy with this camera.
At the end of the day, this is the conclusion they come to, which will sound familiar if you checked out the video review:
If you tried to compare the SJCAM SJ4000 to other popular, cameras like the GoPro HERO Black, you would see that they are similar in looks and function. Sure, the GoPro may offer more features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or low light shooting, but if you are looking for a simple alternative to higher priced action cameras then the SJ4000 is the way to go. SJCAM has the camera listed on their website for around $119.00 however, I found them on Amazon for almost half the price and some bundled with more goodies for a few bucks more.
Reviewers seem to consistently come to this conclusion: for the price, SJCAM SJ4000 is where it’s at. On other sites, the SJ4000 consistently scores well in customer reviews. Bhphotovideo.com’s customers gave it about four and a half stars overall in 56 reviews.
We recently posted some reviews of SJCam’s SJ4000 camera to help you get a sense of what the camera can do in comparison to the other options out there, like the GoPro. But to really get a sense of what it can do, you should see it in action.
So we picked out a couple videos of the SJCam in the open environment, in situations it’s used in everyday. In this case, snowboarding. Both videos use the same camera and they look pretty darn good. Many of the reviews we checked out singled out the SJCam SJ4000 as a solid, much more affordable replacement for the GoPro Hero 3.
The SJCam SJ4000 has 90 reviews at Amazon at the time of this post and rates consistently 4.5 stars. One reviewer, William, reports:
i was looking for a inexpensive video camera to use as a dash cam and I had so much fun with it I had to share my experience with it so I hope it informs you about item and trust me the 1080p images looked fantastic on my 1080p tv!!!
Another customer, Chuck Speed, writes:
The shipping was very quick and it arrived in good condition. I use the camera on my airplane and have found that the remote control feature through the cell phone is very handy when the camera is attached to the outside of the plane. Picture quality is good. The initial instructions are non-existent, but the setup is pretty intuitive.
